What is Kojic Acid?

Kojic Acid: The Well-Known Skin-Brightening Ingredient

You may have come across the term “kojic acid” in cosmetic and skin-care discussions in recent years. But what exactly is kojic acid? What role does it play in skin care? Let’s take a closer look at this popular ferment-derived compound.

Kojic acid is a natural organic substance produced by fungal fermentation, mainly from Aspergillus oryzae, the microorganism used for making sake, miso and soy sauce. It appears as white or off-white crystalline powder and is water-soluble. Known as a classic skin-brightening raw material, kojic acid works mainly by inhibiting tyrosinase, the key enzyme for melanin synthesis. It chelates copper ions required for tyrosinase activity and slows down melanin production, helping improve uneven skin tone. Besides pigment-inhibiting performance, kojic acid also acts as an antioxidant to neutralize harmful free radicals that damage skin cells and accelerate skin aging.

In addition to its brightening properties, kojic acid also delivers antioxidant and mild antibacterial effects. It helps reduce oxidative stress caused by UV rays and external environmental irritation, and relieves skin inflammation which may trigger post-inflammatory dark spots. It supports healthier skin condition and assists in fading freckles, sun spots and acne-related pigment marks.

Kojic acid shows multiple benefits for skin. It brightens complexion, fades dark spots and hyperpigmentation, reduces the appearance of freckles and melasma, improves skin tone uniformity, scavenges free radicals and soothes mild inflammatory responses. It helps restore translucent, even-toned skin.

Even though kojic acid brings outstanding cosmetic benefits, its performance can be affected by many external factors. High temperature, strong light and improper pH environment will accelerate its oxidation and degradation, and it may turn pink or brown once degraded. Formulators usually control the adding dosage (commonly ≤1% for leave-on cosmetic products) and protect finished products from light and heat to keep stable performance. Kojic acid raw material can be made into multiple finished forms, including facial serums, creams, lotions, cleansing soap and peeling products for topical skin application.

In summary, kojic acid is a potent ferment-origin cosmetic active ingredient widely used for skin brightening. From blocking melanin generation, removing dark spots to anti-oxidation and soothing mild inflammation, its skin-care benefits are extensive. Proper formulation and storage can maximize its value for skin-brightening cosmetic projects.
